Jason Munoz, Jake Raflik, Coltin Brehm, Rylan Lubeck, Zak Benitz, Ben Best, Jared Jaborek, Devin Peterson, Vance Grube and Doug Fuller all finished the day with perfect 5-0 records. Devin Peterson needed only used up 4:37 in pinning all 5 of his opponants. Teamwise, the Red Raiders finished the day 5-0 while Iowa Grant and Brookfield East each went 4-1. Brookfield East, Mauston and River Falls all won 2 and lost 3 times. Eau Claire Memorial, Chetek Prairie Farm and the Wisconsin Rapids JV all went 1-4. The Raiders hit a couple bumps against Luxemburg-Casco, but not very many as they cruised to a 39-18 victory. Wrestling started at 145 with Ben Best pinning Mike Giachino. At 152 Jared Jaborek beat Chris Kipp via decision. . At 160 LC's Brent Kinnard defeated Cole Plowman. At 171 Devin Peterson beat Will Stahl with a 11-3 major dec. At 189 Vaughn Grube beat Adam Hallet. At 215 LC's Trevor Spude handed Vance Grube his first loss of the year with a 3-2 decision in OT. At 285 Doug Fuller beat Phil Kinjerski with a 13-5 major dec. At 103 Jason Munoz beat Matt Ronsman on a major dec. At 112 LC's Zach Skarda defeated Jake Jaborek 5-0. At 119 Joe Mercier pinned Alex Schenk in 3:10. At 125 Jake Raflik beat Andy Enderby 11-9. At 130 LC's Jordan Giachino dec over Coltin Brehm 7-5 in OT. At 135 Rylan Lubeck pinned LC's Vickman. At 140 Zak Benitz pinned Matt Zellner.
Fri & Sat. Jan. 2 & 3 Away The Clash - National High School Duals. Rochester, MN. The Red Raiders travelled over to Rochester for what has to be the toughest dual tournament in the country. The Clash is made up of 32 teams from all across the nation. This year's Clash had 14 different states represented. 15 of the Clash teams are currently ranked #1 in their state. At least 10 of those teams, including our Red Raiders are nationally ranked. First up for the Raider was Skutt Catholic from Omaha, Nebraska. Skutt is ranked #19 nationally and #1 in Nebraska. The Raiders took care of Skutt Catholic 41-24. Next up was #8 nationally Ballard-Huxley, Iowa. Let me tell you, this team is extremely tough. The Red Raiders were not able to stay with Ballard-Huxley and lost 45-18. Next for the Raiders was Roseburg, OR. Roseburg came into the Clash ranked #1 in their state and #22 on the national level. This time, the Raiders appeared to unleash a little frustration as they pounded Roseburg 42-15. This meant the Raiders finished the day at 2-1 and went on to compete in the 3rd bracket on day 2. Traditionally, this is where things get really tough because you should be matched up with teams that are pretty close. Once again the Red Raiders finished the day at 2-1. Collins Hill, GA, High Point Regional, NJ also finished the day 2-1 while STMA ended the day 03. Due to criteria and their huge win over High Point Regional, the Red Raiders were declared the winners of their bracket. All three of these dual meets were outstanding, but in my opinion, the win over High Point was the pinnacle of a very nice weeked of wrestling for Rapids. High Point came to the Clash as the returning NJ state champions, ranked #1 in their state and #16 nationally. See the full results of each dual meet below.

Sat. Jan. 17 Home Rapids Quad Noon. Totino-Grace MN, Ellsworth WI and Glenbard North IL. It was another big day for the Red Raiders. Today they knocked off #8 MN, Totino Grace, #2 WI D2, Ellsworth and Illinois powerhouse, Glenbard North. The Glenbard North dual meets have been some very good ones and this year's was no exception. In the opening rounds the Raiders dispatched both Totino Grace and Ellsworth fairly easily even though there were some outstanding individual matches. One of the more memorable matches had to be Devin Peterson's win over 2nd ranked and 3rd in state last year, Nick Schuler from Totino Grace. However, the feature match of the day was Rylan Lubeck's match with Glenbard North's Tony Ramos. Rylan was not able to defeat the #2 nationally and defending IL state champ, but a 3-2 loss by the Rapids freshman is not a bad way to suffer your first loss of the season. On paper, the Red Raiders should have probably easily have beaten Gledbard North. However, like I alluded to earlier, these two teams seem to bring out the best of each other. For the most part, Rapids won the decisive matches while Glenbard kept on chipping away by winning the close ones. In the end it was a come from behind 29-27 win for the Raiders.

Thurs. Jan. 29 Away Wausau West 7:30 p.m. When a good team in any sport has a great season, you can usually look back on the season and find that defining moment. I have a feeling that at the end of this season the Red Raiders will look back and say January 29th was that defining moment. After tonight, they will go forward and know exactly what can happen when you wrestle with heart. The Raiders were without a couple key starters tonight. They were taking on the number one ranked defending state champions, who by the way, were finally back to full strength and to top it off they had to go into a very hostile environment. On paper it didn't look good. But, as they say, that's why they wrestle the matches. The Red Raiders found a way to dig deep and beat the Warriors of Wausau West 25-24 in what was possibly the best dual meet I've ever seen. There were so many huge moments in tonight's dual meet that it would be impossible to single out any one individual. This was truly a great team effort. Wrestling started at 130 as Sam Umlauf defeated Conrad Sawyer 8-4. At 135 Zak Benitz tied the dual at 3 by beating Jason Kyle 6-5. At 140 Steven Monk put West back on top by defeating Ben Best 5-0. At 145 Shawn Perry pinned Miqui Medina in 3:58 to give West a 9-3 lead. At 152 Jared Jaborek started a Rapids come back by beating Seth Trulen 1-0. At 160 Devin Peterson was all over Marcus Casillas and was able to pick up a very important 12-3 major decision. At 171 Vaughn Grube made it 13-9 Rapids by beating Luke Ortschied 4-3 in 2OT. At 189 Jackson Hein defeated Doug Fuller 7-3. At 215 Vance Grube gave the Raiders their biggest lead of the night by pinning Travis Teske in 1:24. West then went on a 3 match winning streak to take a 24-19 lead. In that span Evan Knutson defeated Curt Fuller4-2, Jon Schuster defeated Jason Munoz 13-8 and Joey Marsh defeated Jake Jaborek 3-1. At 119 Jake Raflik picked up a huge win for the Raiders by beating Rickie Pody 2-0. That meant going into the last match Rapids was down 24-22. Coltin Brehm got those magical 3 points for the Raiders by beating Mitch Barnetzke 4-0.
Thurs. Feb. 5 Home Wausau East 7:30 p.m. There wasn't quite as much drama this week as there was last week, but it was still fun. the Red Raiders received 6 forfeits and picked up 7 pins to crush the Lumberjacks of Wausau East 78-3. Coltin Brehm, Ben Best, Jared Jaborek, Vaughn Grube, Doug Fuller and Vance Grube all received forfeits. At 103 Jason Munoz pinned Brandon Kittel in 3:03. At 112 Jake Jaborek pinned Greg Lang in 1:26. At 119 Jake Raflik pinned Alex Bessette ion 3:03. At 130 the Raiders suffered their lone defeat as Conrad Sawyer was defeated by Bee Vang 2-1 in 2OT. At 135 Zak Benitz pinned Connor Whitehead in 1:15. At 152 Cole Plowman pinned David Zuke in 1:28. At 160 Devin Peterson pinned Su white Xiong in 1:00 and at 285 Curt Fuller stopped Decota Witz in :46.
Sat. Feb. 7 Conference at Marshfield 10:00 a.m. The Red Raiders had their ups and downs today. When it was all said and done, they finished the tournament in second place to Wausau West. Due to a formula change in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, this means that the two teams tied for the season conference championship. Coltin Brehm, Devin Peterson, Vance Grube and Curt Fuller were all crowned conference champions. Curt avenged a loss against West's Evan Knutson. Jason Munoz, Jake Raflik, Jared Jaborek, Vaughn Grube and Doug Fuller were runners up.

Sat. Feb 14 Regionals @ Appleton North TBA. With both their individual and team season on the line, the Red Raiders tore apart the competition at the WIAA Regional at Appleton North. On the team side of things, the Raiders racked up 278 points to easily beat second place Waupaca by 113 points. The Red Raiders will now travel to Pulaski to take on the Ashwaubenon Jaguars for a trip to the State Team Tournament. On the individual front, the Raiders qualified 12 wrestlers (9 champions) for the Individual Sectional Tournament at Ashwaubenon.

Tues. Feb. 17 Team Sectionals @ Pulaski 7:00 pm They did it!! Last year the Red Raiders were denied a trip to Team State by the Ashwaubenon Jaguars. This year was a completely different story as the Raiders started off very strong and then cruised to a 46-14 win. Doug Fuller got the Raiders rolling by pinning Derek Labonte in 5:12. At 215 Vance Grube needed only :41 to pin Mitch Klapper. At 285 Curt Fuller beat Steve Neuman 1-0. At 103 Jason Munoz pinned Tony Fasulo in Just :59. At 112 Jake Jaborek continued the Raider barrage by beating Luc Stewart 2-0. At 119 Lance Fabry finally put Ashwaubenon on the board with a 11-9 OT win over Jake Raflik. At 125 Chad Stuiber defeated Coltin Brehm 8-0. At 130 Ashwaubenon moved Zach Stewart up to 135 and rolled the dice with Ethan VanRooy. The move proved to be a lesson in futility for the Jaguars as Rylan Lubeck stuck VanRooy in 3:34 and Ben Best beat Stewart 3-1. At 140 Zack Geyer defeated Garrett Schilling 11-7. At 152 Jerad Jaborek beat Brad McNeil 9-2. At 160 Devin Peterson pinned Jim Taylor in 3:19. At 171 Vaughn Grube finished off the Jaguars by beating Doug Vollmer 12-3. There will likely be some rematches on Saturday. Be sure to be in Ashwaubenon to support our Red Raiders as they work their way towards the WIAA State Individual Tournament.

Day 1 - The Red Raiders had a very good first day at the WIAA State Individual Tournament. The Raiders sent 8 wrestlers to State and placed 6 of them into the semi-final round tomorrow night. At 103 Jake Jaborek dropped a 13-0 first round decision to Derek Gill of Burlington and will be in the wrestlebacks tomorrow morning. Zak Benitz pinned Craig Krueger from Oshkosh North in 3:42 but was then defeated by Brad Dolezal from Marshfield 8-4. Zak will also be in the wrestlebacks tomorrow with a chance of taking third. The rest of the Red Raiders were undefeated after the first two rounds and will finish no worse than sixth. Ben Best beat Wausau West's Jason Kyle 6-3 and then pinned Franklin's Josh Larson in 1:22. Jarad Jaborek beat Fort Atkinson's Ryan Smith 9-1 and then beat Tim Filter from Wisconsin Lutheran 5-1. Devin Peterson pinned Shane Rockweiler from Reedsburg in 1:41 and then beat JR Lewis from Greenfield 5-1. Doug fuller beat Hartford's Nick Broadway 8-4 and then beat Sam Johnson from River Falls 8-3. Vance Grube pinned Greg Antonson from Eau Claire Memorial in 5:48 and then handed Racine Horlick's Jeff Bias his first loss 3-1. Curt Fuller beat Clint Heckner from Kimberly 3-1 and then went on to beat Richard Skaife (DeForest) 4-3 by riding him out in the ultimate OT tie breaker.
Day - 2 It was another big day for the Red Raiders. Ben Best, Devin Peterson, Doug Fuller and Vance Grube all earned championship matches tomorrow night. Ben Best beat James Clark from Hartland Arrowhead 5-0. Devin Peterson beat Wausau West's Marcus Casillas 15-6. Doug Fuller beat Middleton's Tyler Christensen 3-1 in OT and Vance Grube beat Grafton's Brandon Schweitzer 9-4. Also in the semifinal round, Jared Jaborek was defeated by kaukauna's Tony VanDeLoo 3-1, and Curt Fuller lost a very close OT decision to Glen Kendl from Wauwatos West/East. Both Jerad and Curt will join Zak Benitz whoearlier in the day was victorious in both his matches and moves on tomorrow with a chance of placing third. In the first consolation round, Zak beat Reedsburg's Brent Landon 8-1. In the second round Zak beat Hartford's Danny Allen 12-3. Jake Jaborek didn't fair as well as he was defeated by Andrew Moyle from West Allis Hale 10-3.
Day - 3 Ben Best and Vance Grube are State Champions. Ben beat Zack Geyer 4-3 and Vance beat Alex Polizzi 9-8. Devin Peterson and Doug Fuller wrestled tough but came up just short in their championship matches and placed second. Devin was defeated by Kaukauna's Noah Budi 7-4 and Doug lost to Jackson Hein from Wausau West 3-1. Earlier in the day Zak Benitz made the best of his wrestleback opportunity by placing third. Zak beat Stoughton's Dan Schiferl 6-4 and then beat Mukwanago's Pat Sloan 3-0 in the match for third. Jared Jaborek was defeated by Neenah's Ben Strobel 7-1 and Zac Sines 8-5 and placed sixth. Curt Fuller was defeated by Matt Cuadra from Oshkosh West 4-2 in double OT bu then came back to beat Matt Hermes from Racine Park 8-1 and placed fifth. The best word to describe tonight's championship dual meet with Wausau West is intense. I think everyone knew it was going to take a total team effort once again, and that is exactly what the Red Raiders did. Win or lose, every wrestler on the Raider's team came up big tonight. Whether it was Zak Benitz staying close with a State Champion, Ben Westover beating a wrestler that previously beat the Raiders or Rylan Lubeck beating a state champion, it was Rapids Wrestlers that just kept coming up big when it really counted. Four of the matches went to OT. There were no pins for either team. The Warriors scored extra points in only 1 match while the Raiders scored extra points in 3 and beat Wausau West 25-23 in what is probably the most exciting state final we've every seen.
