Fri & Sat. Dec. 29 & 30 Away The Clash - National High School Duals. Rochester, MN.
The Clash stepped up the competition this year and to the four Wisconsin teams, it showed. With a win over Simley, MN the Red Raiders were the only Wisconsin team to win in the first round. The Red Raiders were rested a few starters against Simley but were still able to pull out a 38-21 win. In round two the Red Raiders faced an old rival when they took on Apple Valley, MN. The Red Raiders took an early lead and appeared to be hanging with the #24 nationally ranked Pirates, but couldn't quite hang on. In the end Apple Valley moved to the finals of our bracket by defeating Rapids 32-23. The Red Raiders then moved into a team wrestleback with #30 nationally, Sedro Woolley, WA. Sedro-Woolley is ranked #1 in Washington and are the returning state champions. The Red Raiders wrestled much better against Sedro-Woolley as the beat them 35-17.

Tomorrow the Red Raiders will face Omaha Skutt Catholic, South Plainfield, NJ and Wayzata, MN
During day two of The Clash the Raiders wrestled very well. The teams in day two are pooled depending on how they place within their bracket from day one. As long as the seeding committee was accurate with how the teams were originally bracketed, teams of equal caliber should be facing each other in the championship rounds. By virtue of their win over Simley, their loss to Apple Valley, MN and win over Sedro-Woolley on day one, the Red Raiders place third in their bracket and faced 3 other teams that placed third within their respective brackets on day two. Due to the even competition during the championship rounds, the teams that do well rely heavily on toughness and coaching. In my opinion, that's where the Red Raiders really shined tonight. By beating South Plainfield, NJ 40-23, Wayzata, MN 38-15 and Omaha Skutt Catholic 37-18 they truly dominated their pool and became 1 of only 5 teams at this year's Clash to go 5-1. No team went undefeated. The interesting thing is that 3 of the 5-1 teams came from the 8 team bracket that Rapids started in. Rapids, Apple Valley and Simley all finished the tournament at 5-1 as did the eventual champions from Montini and the team that the Raiders will face in two weeks, Glenbard North. By the way, Glenbard Norh won their pool as well and finished 5th. Their lone loss came from Apple Valley as well. When Rapids and Glenbard North face each other it should be a real barn burner. Juan Medina, Vance Grube and Doug Fuller had fantastic tournaments. All three went 6-0 and scored some key wins for the Red Raiders.

As is typical Raider style, they found ways to win the close matches, score a few extra points and keep their losses fairly close. At 103 Carl DeLuca avenged a loss from last year as he beat Joey Marsh 8-3. At 112 Coltin Bream was edged by Jason Kyle 8-7. At 119 Josh Chappa beat Sam Umlauf 6-2. At 125 Jared Jaminski was down by one point with 5 seconds left. On the restart he rolled Steven Monk for a two point reversal and a 2-1 win. At 130 James Berdan pummeled Tyler Furger 15-5. At 103 Shane Hoffman was pinned by Rhinelander's Jenny Walker in 2:47. At 112 Carl DeLuca received a forfeit. At 119 Josh Chappa received a forfeit. At 125 James Berdan pinned Jacob Hagen in :45. At 130 Jared Jaminski beat Mike Cinfio 12-3. At 135 Craig Melville pinned Nick Danielczak in 1:35. At 140 Ben Best received a forfeit. At 145 Doug Van Berkel received a forfeit. At 152 Juan Medina beat Sam Schneider 6-4. At 160 Mike Fuller was defeated by Eddie Stefonek 5-2. At 171 Andy Slattery received a forfeit. At 189 Justin Fuller was ahead 8-6 and in the down position to start the third period. About a minute into the period there was a short blood time out. When they resumed the ref had Fuller riding instead. Maybe someone else can explain that one. Anyway, Jon Palutke got away but Fuller was able to hang on for a 8-7 win. At 215 Vance Grube received a forfeit and at 285 Doug Fuller scored a reversal in the closing seconds to earn a 4-3 decision over Jacob Mahoney.
Thurs. Feb. 1 Away Stevens Point 7:30 p.m. Most people on the internet forums were predicting SPASH would get somewhere between 4 and 6 wins and score somewhere between 15 and 20 points. They forgot to take into account that we're heading into tournament time and that's when the Red Raiders like to step it up a notch. Rapids won 12 matches tonight, picked up extra points in 7 and cruised to a 51-6 win over Stevens Point. Stevens Points only wins were a couple close decisions. The biggest match of the night had to be at 285 as Doug Fuller pinnned Justin Peterson in 1:07. That's twice in two weeks that Doug beat a second ranked wrestler.

The Galloping Ghosts wrestled very tough and appeared to give it all they had. By winning 5 matches they gave the Raiders one of their better dual meets of the season. But, in the end it wasn't enough as Rapids cruised to a 34-18 win.

Feb. 17 Individual Sectionals Appleton North 10:00 a.m. In what most people feel is the toughest sectional in Wisconsin, the Red Raiders came through with 6 State Qualifiers and several just missed opportunities. Carl DeLuca, Jared Jaminski, Mike Fuller and Vance Grube advanced to State as champions. Josh Chappa and James Berdan advance as Sectional Runners-up. Coltin Brehm, Craig Melville, Ben Best, Juan Medina, Andy Slattery and Justin Fuller placed third while Doug Fuller finished up the day fourth.

Thurs. Fri. & Sat. Feb. 22, 23, and 24 Individual State @ Kohl Center in Madison. What a night the Red Raiders had!! Day one is over and all 6 Raider wrestler have advanced to the semi-finals. At 103 Carl DeLuca beat Jordan Roberts (Milw. Madison) by a major decision 10-2 and then pinned Jeremy Kuklinski (Milw. Pul./Arts/R.R.C.P.) in 1:51. At 119 Josh Chappa pinned Kale Rortvedt (Plymouth) in 2:31 and then beat Steven Monk (Wausau West) 4-2. At 125 Jared Jaminski beat Matt Bell (Brookfield East) 7-1 and then defeated Matt Luedtke (Oak Creek) by a major decision 14-5. At 130 James Berdan knocked off Desi Huerta (Franklin) 3-0 and then beat Derek Olson (Muskego) 8-2. At 152 Mike Fuller beat Andy Dement (D.C. Everest) Dec 10-7 and then downed Brett Ballweg (Sauk Prairie) 3-0. At 215 Vance Grube pinned Josh Viner (La Crosse Logan) in 3:35 and then beat David Witkiewicz (Whitnall) 4-2.
Day Two found 6 Raider wrestlers in the semi-finals with two winning and the other four working towards a possible third place finish. At 103 Carl DeLuca was defeated by Alex Becka (Manitowoc Lincoln) 3-2. At 119 Josh Chappa moved into the championship match with a 4-2 decision over Casey Powell (Waukesha North). At 125 Jared Jaminski also moved into the championship match with a fabulous 4-2 decision over defending State Champion Justin Pollack (Tomah). At 130 James Berdan was defeated by Nick Hucke (Arrowhead) 8-0. At 152 Mike Fuller was defeated by Billy Schlottke (Mukwonago)5-3 and at 215 Vance Grube was edged in OT by Marshfield's Trevor Cordes 3-2.
Day three at the State Individual Tournament went very well for the Red Raiders. Josh Chappa and Jared Jaminski each won their second State Championship medals. Mike Fuller and Vance Grube finished third while Carl DeLuca and James Berdan each placed fifth. Josh Chappa faced Malachi Root in the finals. The last two times they faced each other, it was Root that came away with the victory. This time things were much different as Chappa was able to pin Root in 1:10. Jared Jaminski has more or less owned Anthony VandeHei (Hortonville) over the last couple weeks and this time was no different. This time Jared beat VandeHei 11-2 to claim his second title. Mike Fuller came through the wrestle backs with a 3-1 OT win over Jeff Dolan (Sparta) and the faced Brett Ballweg for the second time in three days. This time it was a little closer as Fuller beat Ballweg 3-1 in OT to take third. Vance Grube's first wrestle back was against WVC foe Travis Stolze (Wausau East). Grube pinned Stolze in 1:31 to get into third place match against Jake Hohlstein (Portage). It took a double OT match, but Vance was able to get the 4-3 win to take third. Carl DeLuca dropped a 4-3 decision to Brian Dentino (Brookfield East) but then came back to beat Alex Hughes (Burlington) Dec 7-1 to take fifth. James Berdan took a similar route as he dropped a 6-5 decision to Matt Gaffney (Sauk Prairie). James then beat Andres Caceres (Verona Area) 5-3 to take fifth.
Fri. & Sat. Mar. 2-3 Team State @ UW Fieldhouse 7:00 p.m./9:00 a.m./6:00 p.m. The first round of Team State is over and Rapids is moving on. The Red Raiders beat Arrowhead tonight 41-13 and will face Tomah tomorrow morning.
