Thurs. Dec. 2 Away Stevens Point 7:30 p.m. The Red Raiders started the 2004-2005 season on the right foot once again. SPASH gave the Raiders a battle at a few weights but was never able to really put anything together against the powerful Rapids lineup and were ultimately whipped 53-16. Wrestling started at 130 as Andy Casper (WR) pinned Jared Shapiral in 4:25. At 135 Derek Onstad even the score by pinning Jaun Medina in 4:58. At 140 Matt Redepenning (WR) picked up a 18-3 TF over Nick Kubowski. At 145 Clint Weiler (WR) needed 2:26 to stop Derek Tietz. At 152 Kevin Tritz picked up the second Raider TF by beating Brian Napiwocki 26-11. At 160 Mike Casey (WR) scored the third TF of the evening with 16-1 victory over Nate Weirzba. At 171 Josh Pascavis got the second Panther win with a 7-1 dec. over Mike Foshey. At 189 Matt Hintz (SP) hung on for a 3-2 win over Elliot Fischer. At 215 Dane Thompson (WR) beat Nate Groshek 15-5. This Saturday the Red Raiders travel to Oconomowoc for the Cooney Invitational. Number 2 ranked Hartland Arrowhead will be there for what could be a preview of the State Team Tournament. Sat. Dec. 4 Away Oconomowoc Invite 9:00 a.m. In the champship dual meet the Red Raiders "tamed" the Hawks of Hartland Arrowhead today. I'm not sure how much of a part it played, but my guess is that some of the things written in the Milwaukee Journal and on the internet probably gave the Rapids Wrestling team a little more incentive as they completely dismantled every team they faced today. In the first round they shut out Nicolet 82-0. In the second round the Raiders beat the home team, Oconomowoc, 64-4. Oconomowoc's only win came when their State Champion, Brad Biersch defeated Jeremy Clark 11-3. In the third round the Red Raiders beat Cudahy 77-3. In the "B" pool, Hartland Arrowhead went 3-0 while Janesville Craig went 2-1. This set up a semi-final bracket featuring Rapids taking on Craig while Arrowhead was battling Oconomowoc. In the Rapids/Craig dual the Red Raiders prevailed 56-10. At 103 Josh Chappa received a forfeit. At 112 Craig's Adam Davis beat Jeremy Clark 10-2. Unfortunately at 119 Josh Hansen was injured in his previous match and was at the hospital when his weight was to report. This meant that the Raiders had to forfeit. The Janesville coaching staff tried to capitalize by switching 119, Andy Livingston and 125, Cory Upmann. Upmann went to 119 to receive the forfeit while #2 ranked Livingston went to 125 to take on Jared Jaminski. On the strength of 5 take downs, Jared scored a very impressive 10-2 major decision over the tough Janesville wrestler. At 130 Andy Casper knocked off Alex Livingston 3-2. At this point Janesville's team, looking a little demoralized and went on to lose the rest. At 135 Juan Medina beat Jake McKillips 8-4. At 140 Matt Redepenning beat Jared Galassini 4-1. At 145 Clint Weiler beat Brandon O'Neill 14-6. At 152 kevin Tritz pinned Adam Hefty in 1:59. At 160 Adam Klonowski pinned Brian Swanson in 1:42. At 171 Mike Casey pinned Steve Adams in 4:47. At 189 Elliot "Dutch" Fischer pinned pinned Brady Hamil in 1:01. At 215 Dane Thompson pinned Sean Tracey in :56 and at 275 Steve Virgil scored an impressive come from behind victory over Ryan Peterson 11-7. In the other Semi-final Arrowhead beat oconomowoc 58-18. This set up the big, possibly over-hyped show down between the state's #2 ranked Arrowhead and #1 ranked Rapids. Wrestling started at 112 where Jeremy Clark beat Andrew Zwirlein 4-2. At 119 Arrowhead's Nick Hucke received a forfeit. At 125 Jared Jaminski continued his tear with a pin over Erik Koglin in 1:40. At 130 Andy Casper dropped a tough 6-5 dec. to Arrowhead's Kyle Hazelwood. At 135 Juan Medina got the Raiders rolling again by beating Brad Hucke 7-3. At 140 Matt Redepenning pinned Jacob Backhaus in 2:28. At 145 Clint Weiler pinned Jake Stickelmaier in :40. At 152 Kevin Tritz brutalized Zach Lepoideven 19-9. At 160 Adam Klonowski controlled and pinned Dave Hoy in 5:32. At 171 Mike Casey won by inj. def. when Arrowhead's Alec Lepoideven landed off the mat and was unable to continue. At 189 Arrowhead's Max Askren (one of the nation's top college recruits) pinned Elliot Fischer in 2:43. At 215 Dane Thompson dominated Nick Ryan for a 15-4 maj. dec. At 275 Steve Virgil picked up a hard fought 5-2 win over Charlie Fish and at 103 Josh Chappa needed 1:31 to pin Erick Yde. At 171 Mike Casey needed only :33 to pin Eric Schwede and at 189 Elliott Fischer scored a TF over Nick Turinetti. Thurs. Dec. 16 Away Merrill 7:30 p.m. The Red Raiders proved that there is a vast difference between themselves and the rest of the state. After only two weeks, the Red Raider wrestling team has already knocked off the #2 and #3 ranked teams in the state. Tonight it was the #3 Merrill. Merrill has a tough, scrappy and well coached team, but they were not up to the task of upsetting the Red Raiders. Rapids won 10 of 14 matches and cruised to a 44-13 victory. At 140 Brad Welter handed Matt Redepenning his first loss of the season with a 3-1 dec. At 145 Clint Weiler beat Aaron Erickson 12-9. At 152 Kevin Tritz pinned Ryan Tomajcik in 3:46. Next up the Raiders will be home for the Rapids Duals. D-3 State Champions Iowa Grant are still undefeated. All of the teams in the tournament have a few very good wrestlers. It should be a fun day. Sat. Dec 18 Home Rapids Duals 10:00 a.m. D-3 State Champions Iowa Grant, Adams-Friendship, River Falls, Wild Rose, LaCrosse Central, Mauston & Brookfield East . With the addition of three more teams, the format for this year's Rapids Duals was a little different than years past, but the results were the same. The field of 8 was seeded and divided into 2 pools of 4 teams each. Your placement in your pool determines where you are bracketed for the semi-finals and finals. By beating Wild Rose 77-3, LaCrosse Central 54-13 and Brookfiled East 68-6 the Red Raiders claimed the stop spot in pool A. D-3 State Champion Iowa Grant disposed of Mauston 60-21, Adams Friendship 51-21 and River Falls 50-23 to claim the top spot in pool B. This meant Rapids would be taking on River Falls in the semi-finals while Iowa Grant would be taking on Brookfield East in the other semi-final. Rapids took care of River Falls 67-7 while Iowa Grant was beating Brookfield East 61-15. This set up the show down between the State Championship teams. The Red Raiders didn't seem to have too much trouble with the young team from Iowa Grant as they were able to come away with a very definitive 47-18 victory. At 145 Clint Weiler beat Brandon Welm 5-2. At 152 Kevin Tritz scored a 18-3 TF over Derek Popp. At 160 the Panthers got on the board when state qualifier Travis Halverson beat Adam klonowski 7-0. Day two of The Clash provided some very exciting wrestling. The Red Raiders did not win it, but they did prove that they can wrestle with and beat some of the best teams in the country. The Raiders finished the round robin championship bracket with a 1-2 record and officially placed fourth in this year's National High School Duals. Along the way, they did knock off the top rated team in Illinois and eventual Clash champion, Carl Sandburg. That's the first time in recent memory that Rapids was able to beat the best team in Illinois. The Red Raiders don't have much time to think about their excellent finish as they head to Kaukauna next weekend for the Cheesehead. With Owatonna, Montini Catholic, Luxemburg-Casco and Mineral Point, this will prove to be one tough individual tournament.
